Discomfort

I love discomfort.

It’s a great friend of mine.

Western culture has things a little backwards right now. We think that if we had every comfort available to us, we’d be happy. We equate comfort with happiness. And now we’re so comfortable we’re miserable. There’s no struggle in our lives. No sense of adventure. We get in a car, we get in an elevator, it all comes easy. What I’ve found is that I’m never more alive than when I’m pushing and I’m in pain, and I’m struggling for high achievement, and in that struggle I think there’s a magic.

While I am not an advocate of pain, I do love a bit of discomfort. I even like creating it for others. I find that most people will agree that progress comes from discomfort. I find myself gravitating to people who truly understand this as a way of life.

I hear a lot that life is hard. But how hard is your life, really? You have a roof over your head, you drive a car to a job, you eat at restaurants. Life could be so much harder. But you yearn for moments of discomfort, so you create them.

Some choose to create them in their relationships with others, colleagues, loves ones or even just random people. Social media is a great place for these people as well.

Some of us choose outside for our discomfort, putting ourselves at risk with Mother Nature, pushing our bodies there, to release the energy, or as I like to say, take the Monster for a walk.

It takes a piece of grit to make a pearl after all.

In 2017, my wife and I are introducing a new thing to do each month – something new and challenging, something gritty. It keeps us on our toes. It keeps our minds fresh. Discomfort is a key to all of this.

Try the following as easy ways to introduce discomfort to your life:

  • once a week grocery shopping. make a plan with what you have otherwise
  • once a month shopping for other things. hell, make that once every three months. six months.
  • delete all social media apps from your phone for a month
  • introduce 4min HIIT workouts to your life.
  • do pushups to failure once a day for a month.

There are so many ways to introduce it, each with a lesson. Grow in these moments, become the better version of yourself.
